SMG – Soudures et Mesures Garanties – Jean Frelat – Shimano Dura Ace 1980

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION

SMG - Soudures et Mesures Garanties - Jean Frelat - Shimano Dura Ace 1980

Soudures et Mesures Garanties - this name always stands for special bikes from Jean Frelat from France. Frelat was one of THE French icons in frame building. You can't find very much on the net - Peter Brügelmann has gathered all the information and pictures on his page about Frelat. I have to say in all honesty that the SMG frames/bikes are my absolute favorites. Very rare, very special, great craftsmanship and well thought out. Frelat built some very good track frames in the early eighties on which French women in particular were very successful both nationally and internationally. All his frames are always built to measure and to the requirements of his customers. He used almost all tube sets of the big suppliers like Columbus, Reynolds or Vitus. His frames are always very finely and thoughtfully built. Often you can even find small soldered letters or names, with the help of which you can assign the bike to a certain rider or owner.

The bike presented here, or the frame he built probably around 1980. The frame is not quite as elaborately crafted as the other SMG in my inventory. But just the rear end with the really great "seat tube sleeve" and elaborate construction of the bottom bracket area show the great art Frelats. The paint is very special, but has quite its charm and fits well with the otherwise rather subtle look of the entire bike. Built up is the bike with a great and mint Shimano Dura Ace group. The Wolber rims with the Mavic 501 hubs can be described, as the entire wheel as new. On the cockpit you also look in vain for signs of use. This SMG is after more than 40 years in a fabulous original condition.

Perfect for the lover of fancy bikes, great individual frame building art.

SMG - Soudures et Mesures Garanties - Jean Frelat - remains one of my absolute favorites of the frame building art.
