C4 "Air One" Carbon Monocoque

Irgendwie musste ich dieses Rad kaufen. Es passt zwar eigentlich nicht so wirklich in den Laden, aber solch frühe Carbon Klassiker begeistern mich in letzter Zeit immer mehr. Und wenn dann noch eine komplette Shimano Dura Ace Gruppe mit spannenden Laufrädern am Rahmen hängt, gibt es nicht mehr so viel zu überlegen.

Am Südzipfel des Lago di Como, gute 30 km nördlich von Monza entfernt, gründeten Nicoletta und Marco Bonfanti 1986 die Firma C4 und schufen den wohl ersten Carbon Monocoque Rahmen für den Radsport. C4 stellte von 1986 bis 2003 Carbon Monocoque Rahmensets her. 1998 hatten sie bereits eine große Expertise im Design und Herstellung von außerordentlichen und besonderen Rahmen, weit weg vom üblichen Stil der sonst so verbreiteten Rahmen. Der C4 Air One Rahmen ist ein sehr elegantes und fortschrittliches Beispiel italienischen Designs. Er wurde beispielsweise in den Saison 1994 von Gianni Bungo für das Team Polti gefahren. Ich finde die Form des Rahmens ganz ansprechend. Auch die Kombination aus Lackierung und Decals kann sich durchaus sehen lassen. Der stimmige Aufbau mit der Dura Ace 74xx Gruppe und den "mächtigen" Laufrädern muten von der Optik fast modernen Design an. Der Laufradsatz besteht aus einem ZIPP 303 Vorderrad und einem 3 Speichen Carbon Hinterrad unbekannten Herstellers.

Dieses Rad ist sicher nichts für den täglichen Gebrauch. Auch Rennen wird man damit nicht mehr gewinnen. Wer einfach einen der ersten Carbon Monocoque Rahmen mit Carbon Laufrädern sucht, vielleicht etwas "posen" möchte, der findet hier sicher "Sein" Rad.

Somehow I had to buy this bike. It doesn't really fit in the shop, but such early carbon classics inspire me more and more lately. And when a complete Shimano Dura Ace group with exciting wheels is attached to the frame, there is not much left to think about.

Nicoletta and Marco Bonfanti founded C4 in 1986 at the southern tip of Lago di Como, a good 30 km north of Monza, and probably created the first carbon monocoque frame for cycling. C4 produced carbon monocoque frame sets from 1986 to 2003. In 1998 they already had a great expertise in the design and manufacture of extraordinary and special frames, far away from the usual style of the otherwise so widespread frames. The C4 Air One frame is a very elegant and progressive example of Italian design. For example, it was driven in the 1994 season by Gianni Bungo for Team Polti. I find the shape of the frame very appealing. The combination of paintwork and decals is also impressive. The harmonious construction with the Dura Ace 74xx group and the "mighty" wheels give the appearance of almost modern design. The wheel set consists of a ZIPP 303 front wheel and a 3 spoke carbon rear wheel of unknown manufacturer.

This bike is certainly not for everyday use. You won't win races with it either. If you are looking for one of the first carbon monocoque frames with carbon wheels, maybe you want to "pose" a little bit, you will surely find "your" bike here.
